Family Fun Day

 

Yesterday we went to Queens and saw the Mike Kelly Show at PS1. Very neat show and Jackson loved the Superman-inspired pieces.

Then we had Donuts from Peter Pan Bakery, which were eaten so fast both Jackson and Cade doubled over in pain. Then we met up with Jose and went to Paulie Gee's in Greenpoint, where I fell in love with the Cherry Jones - Fresh Mozzarella, Gorgonzola Cheese, Prosciutto di Parma, Dried Bing Cherries and Orange Blossom Honey, while Jackson and Cade played games on our phones the entire time, something I once swore never to do (ha) but now realize it sure beats paying for a babysitter and lets us actually have an adult conversation, so win win, right?

Fact: it is the coldest here it has ever been in their lives.

We're staying inside, walking to school with snow pants on, rushing home, building forts, drinking hot chocolate, and reading on the couch.

Jackson, tremendously handsome as Superman. Cade, rocking the Tiger outfit Jackson wore in 2011. And 2012.

A successful, fun night in Park Slope/Windsor Terrace. About 60! and a few drops of rain that quickly passed.

We must have hit 75 houses, pumpkins full to the top when we got home.

Jackson went to school this morning with his Clark Kent forehead-curl still intact.

And finally, what Cade was supposed to be, two days before Halloween. Rejected it:

circus circus!

 A few weeks ago, we went to the circus - at Barclay's Center with Penn, Ruth and John. It was awesome. Cade just sat there, like he did at the Monster Truck Show. Jackson and Penn were totally into it. I was totally into the Human Cannonball. Jackson liked the poodles, tigers, and clowns, and Cade liked "the thing that spun around really fast and then the people walked on the top of it".

I did not like the $14 cotton candy.

When Abigail and Steven and Ezra last came to visit, we went to the Brooklyn Museum and saw this show of El Anatsui at the Brooklyn Museum. I like going anywhere with Abigail and Steven and Ezra.

weekend clean-up

This weekend was unseasonably warm (68? ish?) here. Jon cleaned up the debris from the storm and had two REALLY HELPFUL helpers.

halloween 2012

Halloween seems like ages ago. Following the Hurricane and subsequent Wacky Wednesday life (no school, no transit, no gas - but thankfully yes power, health and safety), we weren't even sure Halloween was happening. It did, as everyone was itching to get out of their houses and there was a real feeling of community and friendliness out there. Jackson opted out of his skeleton costume and wore last year's tiger outfit - fine by me because it was much warmer. Cade was Elmo in cousin Sammy's old costume, thank you Elmo! Our trick-r-treating was cute short by a debilitating tummy-ache (Jackson), but we came home with buckets of candy nevertheless. The best treat of the night was hands-down Kate's peanut butter cookie.

We're all safe and sound here in Brooklyn.

The storm came and passed, and I think the most damage has been to Jon's and my mental health, a little worse for wear as we round the corner into Day 3 with them at home.

Fearing the worst, we filled the tub with water, filled pots on the stove, got out the candles, flashlights and prepared Jackson (who sleeps with the light on, remember what we're dealing with?) for the possibility of the lights going out. He fell asleep clutching a flashlight in his sweaty little hand. Sweaty because he was suffering a 104 fever...this was Sunday night.....just as we ran out of Children's Advil......

He's much better now (A day of lying on the couch, drinking Gatorade, reading Richard Scarry books and watching Dinosaur Train did wonders).

It got pretty windy last night and a few times we were certain the power would go out, but it didn't. I was scared of trees flying through our old glass windows, but they didn't. Today we took a quick walk and saw a few trees down in the neighborhood, but luckily, not much damage.

School is closed again tomorrow and no telling when the subway will be back up.

Tomorrow, we'll be making more puzzles, more tracks, more Legos, more caterpillars and ninja birds out of egg cartons.....I haven't mentioned to them that it's Halloween. I guess we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

My heart goes out to all those suffering real damage and loss.

Sunday afternoon we went over to Dumbo for a picnic, to visit the playground and ride the merry-go-round. Last time we went to the carousel, Jackson was afraid. Happy to report that this time he was fearless, even taking his camera on the horse to take a picture as we went around.

That carousel is so great, I recommend it to anyone visiting Brooklyn with kids!

PS We also squeezed into the photobooth at Bubby's. Fun fun fun.
