While Cade was watching a cartoon, he repeatedly asked "What's the white stuff?" After he asked 15 times, I looked up and explained that it was fire. He asked why it was white. I had to explain that it was in black and white. Cade had never seen anything in black and white and couldn't make sense of it. Kids these days.

Happy 5th birthday, my dear, sweet, funny, cute, LOUD little boy!
And now you are 5 - and now you are for sure not my Baby Cade any more. This breaks my heart but then you fill it again with your smile, your fake-photo smile, your raised-eyebrow smile, your throw-your-head-back-and-laugh smile.
I find it appropriate that you were born Fourth of July weekend, since you are quite a little firecracker. When you run, you sprint. When you sing, you shout. When you dance, you get down. You know what I mean?
You have a natural inclination to defy me, which, I'm sure you can imagine, is pretty frustrating. When I ask you to do something, more often that not, you shout NO! before I can even finish my sentence. Not nice! But then you'll walk in the room and say, "Mama, I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!" and throw your hands out in the air like you are on a Broadway stage, and I wonder where you came from.
You had a great year, at your Pre-K school, every day you would tell me what you learned, very matter of factly - "Mama, first there's the eggs, then the crysallis, then the caterpillar, then the butterfly. That's the life cycle." One day, Jackson and I were in the kitchen and you were at the top of the stairs. Jackson asked me a question, "Are butterflies insects?" and you yelled down, "Butterflies ARE insects!"
You have quite a collection of stuffed animals in your bed, and depending on the temperature, you will cover them up with an assortment of bandanas and blankets. Of the 4 feet width of your bed (which you are about to grow out of any day now), you sleep on 16 inches and your stuffed animals take up the remainder of the space.
You love to bike, dance, play with Superhero's, be read to, and you're so so so close to swimming on your own. Your favorite food - mac and cheese. You claim to LOVE bananas but every time I give you one, you have three bites then say you don't want it anymore. You'll still spend an hour in the bath, and you'll still yell bloody murder if water gets in your eyes, but the other day you had a shower and it didn't terrify you.
You also are Mr. Innocente when Jackson is getting in trouble - "Yes, geesh, Jackson, you have to shut the refrigerator door after you get the milk out!" like you're the most perfect, expert little kid when it comes to remembering to shut the fridge door. Or, piping up, unasked, "I didn't do that! Mh-mmm, not me."
I love you to pieces buddy. You are the best, I love you and I love you and I love you.
Letters on your 4th, 3rd, 2nd, 1st and 6 mos. birthdays.
We celebrated Cade's birthday in Jamestown on July 2nd. 5! 5! 5!
Cade's favorite present was a stuffed bat from Bebe and Papi, that now has a place on honor in his nightly pile of bed-time friends.
We had vanilla cake with orange frosting and rainbow sprinkles, as requested. Cade "helped" decorate the cake - with his dirty fingers. Luckily there were no reports of stomach aches.
Happy 5th Birthday, little buddy! We love you so.

More than anything, he is so excited to go to PS10 with his big brother. Every day, he says, "So, after Friday, then I go to PS10???"
So proud of you, Cade. You light up my world.

For the second year in a row, we're not being with you on Father's Day. It goes without saying that we all miss you so much. So for you, a poem that Cade brought home yesterday (full of references that he has no idea what they mean):
You're the peanut to my butter
the star to my burst
the pop to my tart
the fruit to my loop
BEST to my FRIEND!
Happy Father's Day!
We love you more than any poem could ever express, and certainly more than one blog post could say. We love you more than the loops in the fruit.

My dear, sweet 7 year old! How in the world did that happen?!
What a great year this has been for you. You're almost done with first grade with Mr. Cliff at PS10. You've learned how to read -- level, E, F, G.....now J and K. Superhero books are still your favorite reading materials, although Dr. Seuss and PD Eastman are still going strong. More than reading, you love drawing. Every night before bed, you and Dada (and lately Cade) lie on the floor with notebooks spread out in front of you, colored pencils scattered across the floor (Nonno got you an electric pencil sharpener to assist with that task), and draw til it's time to get into bed (7:30). Then you read in bed til lights-out (8:00). You still threaten to come into our room and sleep in there and to be honest, I'll be a little sad when you don't say that you want that anymore.
You are still our little day-dreamer, staring into space while chewing....slowly forgetting to chew....looking out the window til I say, "Jackson! What are you DOING!" Sometimes you'll sigh and say, "Day-dreaming!" You might take 20 minutes to wash your hands or brush your teeth and Dada and I have NO idea what you are doing in there. But in spite of this languidness, you love to run. In the mornings, you give your backpack to Dada so you can run unhindered. You run as fast as Cade scoots on his scooter. Go, Jackson, go!
You've gone to see some movies in the theatre - Captain America and the Lego Movie. Still unsure about a lot of animated movies (the Frozen bug missed this house), you prefer adult superhero films (hmm, I wonder why?). On top of that, you know how to work Spotify and EVERY DAY after school I have the pleasure of hearing X-Men (the Soundtrack), Green Lantern (the Soundtrack), Batman (the Soundtrack), Captain America (the Soundtrack).....you get the picture. Needless to say, not my fav. You love taking pictures too.
You have lots of friends, your best friend changes now and then, but when I went to bring cupcakes to your classroom, your classmates described you as "caring, funny, handsome, a good friend, and fun to play with." Did I mention you are an awesome big brother? Well you are. Not always patiently and quietly, but compared to some siblings I've seen, you guys get along really well and really are each other's best friends. I'm so happy that you have each other.
I love you buddy. Now, always, forever and ever. I'm so thankful that you are mine.
PS Letters on your first birthday, your second birthday, and your third birthday, fourth birthday, and fifth birthday and sixth birthday.
PPS You still hate peas.

7 years old! I really can't believe this kid is 7. Prospect Park. To the left of the path to the baseball fields. 17 Marshmallow Shooter kits. 6 bags mini marshmallows. 17 friends and siblings. 72 and sunny. Grateful for such a fun, sunny day and beautiful party. Despite up-ending the box of cupcakes trying to get a wagon, three kids, 6 pizzas and various other party items into the park. By myself. While Jon parked the car. On the hardest day ever to find a parking spot. Happy Birthday, Jackson. We love you so so much.

Last night I woke Jon up to tell him there was a tarantula-sized spider crawling across the windowsill - - I was hallucinating. Literally one minute later Jackson came into our room scared---of a spider he had "seen" in his room. Coincidence? Perhaps. I prefer to think it's a strong mother-son psychic bond.

I wanted to switch them in their beds but Jon thought that was playing with danger. Instead, we pulled their beds out into the middle of the rooms.
As Jon predicted, at 4 am, Jackson came to my bedside and said, "Mama, my bed is in the middle of the room."
I told him it was April Fool's and he asked me to move the bed back.
But now he's plotting April Fool's tricks for Dada tonight. Watch out, Dada!
PS The ol' standing up bed trick from 2012.

Jackson's still not a big movie fan - well, scratch that - he IS, when it's something he knows and likes. Then, it's all he can think about (SpyKids). We started watching a Family Movie on the weekends, and they were really into Charlie Chaplin for a while. Then Mission Impossible, with Ethan Hunt. I can't even follow the plot in those movies, so I'm pretty sure they are not getting it, but they do love the action scenes. We did watch Chitty Chitty Bang Bang but Netflix does not have a lot of older movies that I was hoping to share with them - like Mary Poppins or a lot of Disney movies.
I'm curious to check out a few of the movies on this list.
