spider bonding

Last night I woke Jon up to tell him there was a tarantula-sized spider crawling across the windowsill - - I was hallucinating. Literally one minute later Jackson came into our room scared---of a spider he had "seen" in his room. Coincidence? Perhaps. I prefer to think it's a strong mother-son psychic bond.

April Fool's 2013

Every night I lay out their clothes for the next day. This morning, Jackson gamely got up and got dressed in Jon's clothes. Even though he's not smiling in this pic, he was loving it.

I wanted to switch them in their beds but Jon thought that was playing with danger. Instead, we pulled their beds out into the middle of the rooms.

As Jon predicted, at 4 am, Jackson came to my bedside and said, "Mama, my bed is in the middle of the room."

I told him it was April Fool's and he asked me to move the bed back.

But now he's plotting April Fool's tricks for Dada tonight. Watch out, Dada!

PS The ol' standing up bed trick from 2012.

This weekend, Jackson created this stop-motion movie. Special effects by Jon, voices by Jackson and Cade.

happy birthday, auntie nikki!

We love you beyond words! We love you to pieces! Happy Happy Birthday!

Cade loves you so much he's really workin' it out in this video :)
Walking to school today, Cade said, "Mama, it's cold. Let's do the hustle."

Jackson's still not a big movie fan - well, scratch that - he IS, when it's something he knows and likes. Then, it's all he can think about (SpyKids). We started watching a Family Movie on the weekends, and they were really into Charlie Chaplin for a while. Then Mission Impossible, with Ethan Hunt. I can't even follow the plot in those movies, so I'm pretty sure they are not getting it, but they do love the action scenes. We did watch Chitty Chitty Bang Bang but Netflix does not have a lot of older movies that I was hoping to share with them - like Mary Poppins or a lot of Disney movies.

I'm curious to check out a few of the movies on this list.

firsts, Cade - swimming

Let the record show that Cade, at his last swim class, officially swam unassisted and with no flotation devices. And to think that one year ago Jon and I would be red in the face as he REFUSED to set foot in the water. Screamed. Cried. Shrieked. and Sobbed. We dreaded swim class. Couldn't take it!

This time - jumped in the deep end. Floated on his back. Swam from his teacher to the wall. All by himself. Good job, little buddy! We're really proud of you.

Jackson, in the exact same spot, 2012.

We made homemade Focaccia the other day. Mostly because Jackson eats very little, and it's one of the few things he actually requests once in a while. And because there are little rosemary specs on it, I like to encourage that - because God forbid there is a spec on anything else he might be eating. (Or a sliver of orange pulp in his smoothie, while we're on the topic).

Anyway, we used this recipe and it was OK.

So, after 3+ hours or rising, waiting, watching, etc Jackson has a bite and casually remarked, "Mama,  the Whole Foods one is better."

I'm cooking dinner in the kitchen with my back to them at the counter. It's totally quiet, and I hear Cade whisper, "Do you want to get stabbed?" and turn around to see him grasping a fork and pointing it at Jackson's head.

Saturday Family Fun Day - impromptu sledding in the park, in 50 degree springlike weather. Drove into the city to see Jon's new office space, JUICY PORK BUNS in Chinatown for dinner. Home by bath time. A good day. Then Jon left again for LA. A bad day. We miss you Dada. A lot.

Jackson + Baby Emma, Christmas 2013

(and one of me and Emma too)

Cade hit Jackson with a toy.

Jackson: Cade, saying sorry doesn't, like, disappear your boo-boo!

Jon: When are you guys going to start listening?!?!

Jon started reading The Hobbit out loud to them. Jackson leans over and whispers, "Is this real?"

Jackson, with menace in his voice: I'll beat you T-Rex style again.

Cade school photo

Pre-K, school picture day. For the record, I had no idea they were going to put him in a cap and gown. Hilarious!

Family Fun Day

Yesterday we went to Queens and saw the Mike Kelly Show at PS1. Very neat show and Jackson loved the Superman-inspired pieces.

Then we had Donuts from Peter Pan Bakery, which were eaten so fast both Jackson and Cade doubled over in pain. Then we met up with Jose and went to Paulie Gee's in Greenpoint, where I fell in love with the Cherry Jones - Fresh Mozzarella, Gorgonzola Cheese, Prosciutto di Parma, Dried Bing Cherries and Orange Blossom Honey, while Jackson and Cade played games on our phones the entire time, something I once swore never to do (ha) but now realize it sure beats paying for a babysitter and lets us actually have an adult conversation, so win win, right?

Jackson: Cade, why do you always say 'Thanks' instead of 'Thank you'?

Cade: I like it.

Jackson: Well, I don't like it, so from now on can you say 'Thank you' instead of 'Thanks'?

Fact: it is the coldest here it has ever been in their lives.

We're staying inside, walking to school with snow pants on, rushing home, building forts, drinking hot chocolate, and reading on the couch.

And excavating dinosaur bones:

firsts, Cade - bike-riding

We had a great Christmas and a great New Year's, and I, as always, have a hard time keeping up with all the photos.

In the meantime, I wanted to note for the record: Cade, riding a pedal bike. Within 10 minutes he was keeping up with his older brother and cousin, no problem, on his little pink clown bike.

The Ikea

Jackson's Top Three Favorite Restaurants:

1. Hunan Delight (Beef and Broccoli)
2. Hanco's (Shredded Chicken Sandwich, no cilantro, no spice)
3. The IKEA

Parents, in case you were wondering - - at ages 4 and 6, I finally feel comfortable putting up the vintage glass ornaments (up high) and this year, for the first time, both boys got 'into' decorating/helping with the tree. Jackson even got up early one morning, went downstairs and started adding more ornaments before anyone was up.
